I’ve taken up running this year and I’m enjoying it a lot. I don’t run big distances (5km is the longest) or fast times but it’s been an addictive few months as I’ve improved my running fitness. As a result, I haven’t done much cycling recently. To be honest, I think I needed a break from cycling and from the target distance I set myself at the beginning of the year. I needed to get back into a cycling-is-fun routine and the break has done me good.
The running thing has taken me a bit by surprise and I’ve even taken part in Horsham Parkrun. I’ve had periods of enthusiasm for jogging/running in the past but they have never lasted. This time has been different.
I’m enjoying it for several reasons:
- It’s an easy way to get out of the house at any time of day. I work from home and the ability to drop everything, put on some running shoes, and just run a few laps whenever I want is great!
- It was tough at first but I’m slowly improving my times. I like that.
- Running in a group at a parkrun is a great experience (apart from a dog running out under my feet last week, ahem). Everyone is enthusiastic and running with 200 others is fantastic motivation!
- I like keeping a track of my times and seeing what others do on an app like Strava (or any running/fitness app).
So, it’s all good. I plan to continue running and the short break from cycling has been what I needed. I’m sure that my cycling will resume in the not too distant future though!
