I couldn’t help but be rather dismayed at one of the lead stories in Horsham’s local paper, the West Sussex County Times, this week. They reported that a town councillor objected to West Sussex County Council placing ‘ugly’ cycling signage on a bridleway that exists in Horsham town centre. I cannot find the article online but the story is reported on the As Easy As Riding a Bike blog.
Aside from the fact that this seems to be a fairly trivial story to be given such prominence, I’m disappointed that cycling along a wide bridle path to avoid a busy road junction is not actively encouraged. Surely, there should be more activity aimed at promoting cycling and finding ways to make cycling easier through towns like Horsham. Particularly when this is an existing bridleway that links up a few yards away with another cycle path along North Street towards Horsham Station.
I cannot help but feel that the priorities are all wrong here.
